The ‘technology war’ seems to be getting bigger and bigger, days after Google launched Android- a google powered operating system, Microsoft launched Windows Phone 7, a new operating system for mobile phones. Microsoft is already leading the market for computer operating systems, and this move is aimed at establishing a strong foothold in the mobile phone industry. The company is particularly targeting to bank on the rising popularity of smartphones amongst the customers. Windows phone 7 is designed keeping in mind the needs of these special customers, and is bound to offer additional functionalities, good user interface and advanced functional prospects.
Other Microsoft services such as Zune media service and Xbox LIVE gaming environment are integrated into this operating system. While the Xbox lures the gaming addicts, the popular Zune media services synchronizes the music and video files. With this the software giant has launched “Live Tiles”,a virtual post-its for the Mobile Phone. Shortcuts for favorite apps or Web sites in the form of large, colorful tiles greet you to the home screen. Live tiles with links to your Facebook profile or friends can also be placed for a one touch access. “Live” here means that they are working in real time environment, so if the content of the app or site is updated, the tile will be automatically updated on your screen.
“Hubs” as the Microsoft says, is a new application, which by default combines the content of around six themes including people, pictures, games , marketplace, music and office. The People Hub displays friends from all of your social networks in three screens: Recent, All and What’s New. ‘Recent’ screen shows you the most recently updated profile or pictures, ‘All’ displays the whole list of friends and updates, and the ‘What’s new’ screen displays, what are the latest happenings around you.
To demonstrate complete control, Microsoft has locked the Windows Mobile 7 User interface, thereby restricting the hardware platforms to its partners. Microsoft’s hardware partners include Dell, HTC, Garmin ASUS, LG, Samsung, SE, Toshiba, HP and Qualcomm. But as for flash integration, Microsoft stated that “it has no problem, introducing Flash”, which is an Adobe hallmark application. This comes as a relief to the users, after the smartphone leader Apple announced that it’s latest products would not support flash integration. Most websites, and web based applications around the globe work on flash based integration, and therefore flash introduction in the Windows 7 series certainly sounds better.
Microsoft tries to strike a balance here by neither making Windows Phone 7 as a closed end application (Flash support), and nor even a truely open ended application, which is actually good as it maintains integrity of the application and addresses security concerns, and on the contrary doesn’t limits the application scope by supporting major integrations. Amidst all this buzz we are expecting that Microsoft comes up with something really interesting and user-friendly.
